Lillie’s Q

Doser: Lillie’s Q

Founder: Chef Charlie McKenna

Why we love him: McKenna’s recipes are tried and true — they’re all derived from family recipes passed down from his grandmother Lillie and his pit-master father, Quito, the namesakes for Lillie’s Q.

Products: McKenna’s line of spices and rubs, like the vinegary Carolina Gold and a smoke-tinged red sauce infused with “liquid smoke” (ie condensation collected from the restaurant’s smoker), that help you recreate the magic at home.

Spirit-driven: There are more than 40 all-American craft beers to be had at Lillie’s Q, including one designed especially for McKenna’s brand of barbecue by Chicago’s Metropolitan Brewing. But you’ll find the real spirit of the South in Lillie’s Q specialty moonshine-based cocktails like the “Morning Lillie,” a twist on the traditional Bloody Mary.

Dose appearances: July 10, August 14 and September 25.

Winter Session

Doser: Winter Session

Founders: Husband and wife team Roy Katz and Tanya Fleisher

Why we love them: All of Winter Session’s utilitarian, slightly preppy wares are made from upcycled materials – vintage tents, Carhart’s and waxed canvas – giving each piece a distressed, worn-in look that we love.

Products: In addition to their signature aprons, bags of various sizes, and pocket squares, they’ve extended into the kid’s market with a few goodies. Same style, just much smaller in scale.

Dose appearances: August 14 and counting.

Mindy’s Hot Chocolate

Doser: Mindy’s Hot Chocolate

Founder: Mindy Segal

Why we love her:  Any self-respecting Chicago sugar-lover knows that Mindy’s Hot Chocolate has some of the fiercest sweets in town. Her style owes as much to a playful sense of nostalgia as it does to rigorous technical mastery. (In other words: woman makes a damn good coffee cake.)

Segal’s signature desserts are anchored in traditional flavors, with an original twist, like the Concord grape syrup in “Thoughts on a Peanut Butter Cup,” or sour cream sorbet in the “Dreamsicle.” You can also buy prepackaged chocolates, hot chocolate mixes and, coming soon: homemade marshmallows.

Products: Segal uses Dose to preview baked goods you’ll find at Hot Chocolate 2.0, a new version of the restaurant (with an expanded in-house bakery) opening next year. Look for quiche, sticky buns, rugelach, coffee cakes, demi-baguettes laced with lardo, pots of lemon curd and much, much more.

Dose appearances: August 14, November 6
