Between the market day musical stylings of Haute Closet in Your Head and the unbeatable beat machines from Gentleman’s Boombox, Dose’s devotion to music runs deep. And we never say no to some girl power. Which is why we’re pleased as punch to welcome Girls Rock! Chicago as October’s Dose Cause.
Let’s admit it: Dose Market is a mecca of ladies (gents, you listening?), and all of us who are a part of making Dose Market happen — the Dosettes, the vendors, the shoppers — have, somewhere along the line, a mentor or two or more to thank. Someone who’s nurtured in us the creativity, collaborative spirit and confidence essential to building something beautiful and new. Music, and rock bands in particular, are the perfect forum to foster these life skills that are so valuable no matter where we end up.
Founded in 2005, Girls Rock! Chicago empowers girls ages eight to sixteen through week-long intensive music camps. Bringing together a socioeconomically diverse group of rockin’ young ladies, the primarily volunteer staff (which includes many camper alumna) teach instrument lessons, lead team-building activities and introduce campers to the real-live rock scene via visits from local musicians. The week culminates in a performance on stages any of us would be proud to stand on, The Bottom Lounge and Metro, along with a recording session at Engine Records.
We’re stoked to offer their recently launched merch shop at Dose, where you can purchase recordings and apparel, as well as learn more about how you can get involved (think: rock camp for grown-ups) and connect first-hand with the ladies who help build a better future for the rock stars in all of us.
